Frequently Asked Questions About Caring for Turfgrass Lawns

What Is the Best Type of Grass Seed for My Lawn?

Most lawns in Iowa use cool season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, or fescue. These resilient grasses are best suited for climates that experience extreme winter weather. They grow well in colder conditions and go dormant during extreme heat or dry weather.

How Much Grass Seed Do I Need for My Lawn?

The amount of seed your lawn requires will depend on the type of grass mix you are planting and the total square footage of the area. Manufacturers will typically recommend a certain amount of seed (in pounds) per 1,000 square feet of lawn. At D & K Products, we offer recommended seeding rates for each of our products. These rates will differ depending on whether you are applying new seed or overseeding, and whether the area sees a high or low amount of use.

What Is the Best Time to Grass Seed Your Lawn?

If you are using cool season grass, the best time to seed your lawn is in the late summer or early fall. The conditions during these months are prime for jumpstarting the germination process, and the timing will reduce competition with summer weeds. Mid-August through mid-September is a prime time to apply the seed.

What Is the Best Way to Plant Grass Seed in an Existing Lawn?

Planting grass seed in a lawn that already has grass growing is a great way to help thicken your lawn if your grass carpet is thinning. This is known as interseeding, if you plant the same grass species, or overseeding if you are introducing a new species.

The best steps for overseeding your lawn are:

  • Mow existing grass to a height of about 2 inches. This will help to reduce competition for sunlight.
  • If possible, aerate your lawn with a core aerator. This reduces soil compaction and allows water, air, and fertilizer to penetrate the soil better, promoting root growth.
  • Plant the grass seed according to the recommended pound-per-1,000-square-foot ratio. Go ahead and fertilize after planting.
  • You can mow once you have a stand of grass that is long enough to mow.
  • Do not apply any herbicides until after you have mowed three times.

Again, the best time to plant new grass seed will be in the late summer or early fall.
